Police Protection Order

A Police Protection Order (PPO) is an emergency measure used by the police to ensure the immediate safety of a child. It grants the police the authority to remove a child from their current environment if there is a belief that the child is at immediate risk of significant harm. Unlike court-issued orders, a PPO does not require prior approval from a court. This order is temporary, lasting up to 72 hours, providing a short window for the local authority to decide on the next steps, which may include applying for an Emergency Protection Order (EPO) or initiating care proceedings.

FAQs

During this period, the child may be placed under the protection of the police or local authority, away from the environment deemed unsafe. The local authority will assess the situation and decide whether further action, such as applying for an EPO or initiating care proceedings, is necessary.

A PPO is issued when the police believe a child is in immediate danger of significant harm. This could be due to allegations of abuse, neglect, or other circumstances where the child’s safety is at immediate risk.

While a PPO itself is a temporary measure and not subject to direct challenge, you have the right to legal representation to address the underlying concerns and to prepare for any subsequent legal actions, such as care proceedings or an application for an EPO.

Parents are entitled to be informed about the police’s actions under a PPO, including where their child has been taken (if safe to disclose). However, the immediate focus of a PPO is the child’s safety, which may temporarily limit parental contact.

Our team can provide urgent legal advice, help you understand the process and your rights, and represent you in any subsequent legal proceedings. We aim to work towards the best possible outcome for your family, focusing on the welfare of your child.

Contact Southgate Solicitors immediately for legal support. Quick action is crucial to address the situation effectively and to prepare for any further legal steps.

Prevention focuses on addressing any concerns raised by the authorities before they escalate to an emergency level. Engaging with legal counsel early, especially if you are aware of potential risks or allegations, is advisable.
