As a family law solicitor, part of my job is to advise clients regarding their rights and available options for those facing a relationship breakdown. I am able to outline to client’s what they can do surrounding the issues they are facing and provide them with sensible and realistic advice.

I can answer most questions client’s throw at me, but there is one question that I cannot answer and that is “why did I marry my husband/wife?”

This is a question that often comes out when speaking to clients. The actions of a client’s spouse can leave them feeling deflated, frustrated and infuriated. Of course, client’s are only asking this as a rhetorical question and to let off some steam, but during my career, I have come to learn that there is a frightening number of people who do not quite realise the legal and financial implications of getting married.

Marriage for most people is such a special and happy time and most people claim that it is “the best day of their life.” It is so common for people to rush into marriage without actually thinking fully about the future and more importantly, what will happen in the potential unfortunate event that parties decide to divorce.

I may not be able to answer the question about why somebody decided to marry a particular person in the first place, but what I can do is assist someone in escaping a marriage and moving forwards with their life. I appreciate that divorce is an extremely difficult and emotional time, but I can help guide people through the process by providing a client with support and reassurance. I deal with matters in a non-confrontational and constructive manner.
