Recent research by polling company Savanta shows that one in four people now choose to leave money to charity in their willsโan increase of 50% since 2014. This rise in charitable giving may be linked to the growing public trust in charities, which is currently at its highest level in a decade.
Why Are More People Leaving Money to Charity?
The Charity Commission, the regulator for charities in England and Wales, has released new findings showing that public trust in charities has reached its highest point since 2014. The research highlights that how a charity spends its money is the most important factor for donors. Close behind is the assurance that the charity achieves its purpose, makes a real difference, and operates to high ethical standards.
Overall, trust in charities is continuing to recover. The latest data shows that charities score 6.5 out of 10 for trustโan improvement from 6.3 in 2023 and a notable rise from a low of 5.5 in 2018, following several high-profile scandals.
Nearly 60% of people now report “high” trust in charities (scoring 7 out of 10 or higher), making charities one of the most trusted groups in society, second only to doctors.
Growing Need for Charities Amid Financial Challenges
Despite this increased trust, the report also highlights a challenging financial environment for charities. While more people are turning to charities for support, there is a decline in the percentage of people donating. This trend underscores the importance of charitable donations, particularly in wills, to help sustain charitiesโ vital work.
David Holdsworth, Chief Executive of the Charity Commission, commented: โThese findings are encouraging, demonstrating that charities collectively are once again firmly trusted by the public, making a visible, essential difference locally, nationally, and globally.”
However, Holdsworth also warned that there is no room for complacency. โThe new findings point to the challenging financial environment charities are operating in, with a decline in the number of people giving to charity, while the high cost of living appears to be driving more people to access charity services.โ
