Family mediation voucher scheme extended until next year

The UK Government’s family mediation voucher scheme has been extended until March 2025, continuing its support for families seeking to resolve disputes outside of the courtroom.

Originally introduced in April 2021, the scheme was launched as a pilot project to ease pressure on the family courts during the pandemic. It offers couples £500 in funding towards mediation costs, helping them reach agreements over child arrangements, finances, and property without resorting to litigation.

Since its inception, the scheme has assisted over 37,700 families, with early findings indicating that around 70% reach a full or partial agreement through mediation.

How mediation works

Family mediation is a voluntary and confidential process, led by an independent, professionally trained mediator. Unlike court proceedings, the mediator does not issue a ruling or take sides. Instead, they facilitate open discussion, helping both parties to identify solutions and negotiate terms on matters such as:

  • Where the children will live

  • How parenting responsibilities are shared

  • Financial arrangements after separation

  • Division of assets or property

Sessions can take place in person or remotely, offering flexible and accessible support for separating couples.

Why mediation is effective

Mediation offers multiple benefits over traditional court proceedings:

  • Cost-effective: Significantly cheaper than litigation

  • Faster resolution: Agreements can be reached in weeks, not months

  • Less stressful: Encourages collaboration rather than conflict

  • Better for children: Reduces parental disputes and promotes cooperative parenting

Importantly, while mediated agreements are not automatically legally binding, couples can formalise their decisions through a court order or legal documentation.

Positive impact on the court system

Since launching the voucher scheme, the Ministry of Justice has seen a notable decline in court applications, suggesting that mediation is helping to resolve disputes earlier in the process. By diverting thousands of cases away from court, the scheme has not only helped families but also eased pressure on the legal system, saving both time and public resources.

With the latest extension, even more families will be able to access affordable mediation services, promoting smoother transitions and better outcomes—especially for children.
