Insights and experiences at southgate solicitors
Hasan Hadi
Antony Wilkinson – Associate Solicitor
- My experience at southgate solicitors since joining in August 2018 has been filled with almost as much fun as it has hard work. Working in family law can be very stressful and emotionally demanding at times. The clients can be difficult, and so can the other parties! These issues are not going to change wherever you work. The one thing that you can change is the environment and the culture in which you work. If you get that right, your job suddenly becomes a lot less stressful and going to work is an enjoyable experience, rather than one you dread. During my time at southgate solicitors I have enjoyed team outings and events, gifts and team lunches. We have a staff Christmas party as well as a larger Christmas party where we invite peers and colleagues who work both within, and outside of, family law. A lot of trust is put into us as employees and we work hard so we can have fun along the way. There are also other perks such as the ability to work from home. This has proved to be very useful when I am in Court for half a day or if I need to stay at home for other reasons. The ability to work remotely has been one of the best benefits of this job and has meant I can be a lot more productive whether I am at home, at Court or visiting a client at home. The systems and technology at southgate solicitors also helped increase my productivity and efficiency and has made more arduous tasks a lot easier.
Rajan Thandi – Accredited Solicitor
Having been at southgate solicitors since March 2018, one of the main things that stand out and separates the firm from many others is the commitment and emphasis on work-life balance. As solicitors we all know, accept and live with the reality that it is all too easy to spend hours upon hours at the office or even at home working and still have more to do. The difference however at southgate solicitors is that it is not expected nor demanded that you should be available at all hours of the day/night. There is particular emphasis on working effectively and smartly, rather than simply working. This is underscored by various team trips; events and now with our new premises, our break room which allows us to take a short break and then get back to the work recharged. Following on from that, it is notable how much the firm invests in its people. We’ve all had to look for courses for CPD purposes (or as it is now, continuing competence) and while some courses may catch our eye and interest, costs have been an issue. At southgate solicitors, provided the course is relevant and appears to actually benefit us, there is no issue with attending a paid course. That is extremely refreshing as although there are of course excellent courses/talks for free out there, there are charges to many others. All of that is in addition to having a reputable database for family law which is maintained and constantly accessible means we can focus on providing excellent advice to our clients.
Chloë Rodway – Associate Solicitor & Mediator
I have been a solicitor at southgate solicitors since the beginning of March 2020. A matter of days after joining the firm, the country went into lockdown. I had never worked from home prior to the pandemic and I was quite nervous as to how I would cope and deal with remote working. I can honestly say that Hasan and the team made it such an easy experience and the firm already had systems in place to allow working from home to happen seamlessly. Hasan ensured that everybody’s mental wellbeing was being looked after whilst we were all working remotely. I had previously worked at various other law firms prior to joining southgate solicitors, but it is safe to say that this firm implements practices and systems which I have never come across before. The modern case management and software means that tasks are a lot easier to carry out and they allow me to focus on my clients. Everybody at southgate solicitors is extremely friendly and a pleasure to work with. There is so much support between each other which makes it such a positive and happy place to work. Although I have not utilised the office space much since joining the firm, I can say that the space provided is absolutely fantastic and Hasan really looks after all his staff. In such a relatively short space of time, I have absolutely loved and thoroughly enjoyed my time at the firm and I am super excited to continue my solicitor journey with the team and cannot wait until we are all reunited back in the office together again.
Ceylan Kahya – Family Law Solicitor
Joining a new firm in the middle of a pandemic may not seem like one of the greatest ideas but it was probably one of the best I have had! I joined southgate solicitors at the start of December 2020 as a family law solicitor specialising in public and private children matters.
As soon as I joined, I knew that it was the firm for me. I can honestly say that I really enjoy working at southgate solicitors. My colleagues are wonderful, we all help each other and there is a genuine team spirit. Our office is equipped with all the necessary equipment to get the job done efficiently and to enable us to provide our clients with the best service. In addition to the necessities, we have various perks such as a ping pong table, a pool table, and a breakout room with a TV so that we can all take a well-earned break from our desks.
I currently have a hybrid set up; I usually work from home three days a week and I am in the office two days a week. Setting up a workspace at home was a process that could not have gone smoother thanks to our managing director Hasan. When I was provided with the choice of all the necessary equipment and furniture needed to make my working from home as comfortable as possible.
The technology and processes implemented by the firm also makes carrying out our job a lot easier; we are able to send documents to clients for signing with electronic signatures (amazing in these times, bundle creation is made easy using simple software and our case management system is the best I have used in my legal career.
What really stands out for me is the emphasis on work-life balance here at southgate solicitors. We work hard and are rewarded for it! There have been times that I have been in the office working late and have been told to close my laptop and to stop working. We are not expected to work all hours of the day, as long as we get the work done and do our best for our clients.
Our job is not easy, this will be the same at every firm. But it is made a lot easier by having great systems in place, an ethos of working hard, and being rewarded with fun activities such as regular team lunches and our annual team trips (such as our long weekend away to Center Parcs this year) and having an excellent team of colleagues.
I am so grateful to be a part of this amazing firm and I know that we will continue to grow as fast as it has in the last few years!
Andriana Evagora – Family Law Solicitor
I joined southgate solicitors in September 2021 as a family law solicitor specialising in private children matters. Previously, I had been at a firm in central London with more of an emphasis on civil litigation, and to be completely honest, I questioned whether this profession was for me.
When I moved to southgate solicitors, I immediately realised that not only was this profession for me, but this amazing, tight-knit firm was also for me. I can, hand on heart, picture myself here until I am old and decrepit!
I can truly say that I love working at southgate solicitors. My colleagues have become my friends and they are absolutely incredible, constantly going out of their way to assist each other. I also have to give a special mention to our managing partner, Hasan Hadi (he hasn’t bribed me to write this part, I promise). Hasan is the kindest, most generous and supportive boss I know of. Hasan is our foundation and without him southgate solicitors would not be what it is today.
Our office is modern, welcoming and equipped with all the necessary equipment to get the job done efficiently and to enable us to provide our clients with the best service. In addition to the necessities, we have various perks such as a ping pong table, a pool table, and a breakout room with a TV (and Netflix) so that we can all take a break from our desks.
I, along with most of the team, currently have a hybrid set up. I usually work from home three or four days a week and I am in the office one or two days a week. Hasan continues to ensure that we are all equipped with the necessary equipment and furniture needed to make working from home as smooth as possible.
southgate solicitors implements processes and systems that make our life unbelievably easier and this allows us to focus on our clients and their matters. We have a modern case management system and various other software and apps which means that we are able to create hearing bundles effortlessly (gone were the days where we stood at the printer, printing and collating the documents, and then scanning them in just so we could obtain an electronic copy), we are able to send documents to clients for signing with electronic signatures and our case management system is the best I have used.
In terms of “work-life balance”, this is something that is actively encouraged. On occasions, when I have been seen working past 5pm, I have been told to switch off and enjoy my evening. As many of the team will say, we are not expected to work all hours of the day. As long as our work gets done and we provide the best service to our clients, this is what matters.
In addition to this, our hard work is also rewarded. Whether this be team lunches or team trips away, this is another perk of working at southgate solicitors.
I am beyond proud to work at southgate solicitors with such an amazing and supportive team. I am and always will be eternally grateful for the opportunity and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for us, because I know it’s going to be a good one!
Anjali Shah – Paralegal
Since the age of 16, I’ve always known I wanted to get my foot into the door and experience what it is like working amongst lawyers and to get an insight into the work I could do if I was to ever become a solicitor. My first legal experience was at an immigration firm, and at that age, I was just excited to experience what I could and get a better understanding of immigration work.
After finishing my degree, I knew I wanted further work experience that could strengthen my skills. What was important to me was working in a firm where I felt cared for, and where I knew I would learn in an area of law that I would find most interesting, as stepping into a professional environment seemed extremely daunting! This was when I came across southgate solicitors, and with no family law experience behind me, I was still extremely eager to get involved and see what they were about.
The moment I stepped in and had my interviews, I left with a sense of satisfaction – the team’s presence is welcoming, and to think it has only been a year, I have learnt so much about myself and the firm.
I have been working as a Client Services Executive – coming into the office has always been my favourite part – with our blue and white colour combination, pool table, breakout room and sofas, the environment has always felt extremely welcoming and relaxing, for those days where work can get a lot, I know I am somewhere where I can be myself and still get my work done productively. I have been able to enjoy working from home and been provided with the equipment necessary to do so. Southgate is extremely flexible and accommodating for your needs in order for you to transition your work as seems fit.
I have been able to quickly learn and adapt to the systems used; and it was reassuring knowing I won’t have to struggle with what I would be using on a regular basis. With the support of my colleagues guiding me through the way, I have also always had someone to turn to if I wanted to discuss clients and to learn more about the law in question.
Alongside the support provided in the office, the work-life balance at southgate has also been enjoyable – from team trips to team lunches, you can be sure that you will get time to clock off and take a break from your day-to-day tasks. I have never felt dissatisfaction during work, as I know matters can always be discussed with my colleagues.
All in all, I believe I have found a team that has always got my best interests at heart and who want to see me prosper. I am forever grateful to still be here whilst working on my LPC, and as of this month, I have taken on a new role as a Legal Assistant! This responsibility has made me feel extremely honoured and I feel as though I have a promising journey ahead. I am excited to see where my journey takes me!
Rosie Sparkes – Legal Intern
Having only recently joined Southgate Solicitors in January 2023, I can safely say that it is one of the most welcoming environments I have had the pleasure of working in. My role as a legal intern is to learn from and assist the team with their clients and cases, including working alongside the Client Services Executive team.
As a newcomer to the world of legal work, I naturally have a lot of questions. Every member of the team is more than willing to help and go the extra mile to explain and work through a problem thoroughly. In addition, Hasan provides a supportive and modern approach to working, looking out for all employees and their work-life balance, while also ensuring that clients get the best possible service while they are working with us.
Even though I have only been here for a short amount of time, I have already been made to feel a part of the team. As with any law firm, there is an emphasis placed on efficient and thorough work, however, there is also the bonus of regular team outings and a relaxed office space where productivity can thrive due to the ability to break away and play a game of pool, (or make a funky tiktok!), before returning to work refreshed and ready to focus again.
As a newbie, many of the legal processes can appear daunting. However, the software systems in place here ensure a much more streamlined and straightforward way of dealing with enquiries and management of cases. This in turn enables a quicker and more efficient learning process. All in all, although my time at Southgate Solicitors is limited to a year, I am super excited to see what the rest of the year has to offer and am hugely grateful for the opportunity to be able to do my internship here.
Lucy Cornish, Family law Solicitor
Since joining southgate solicitors in September 2023, my experience has been nothing short of fantastic. The firm’s commitment to fostering a positive work environment was evident from the very beginning. With great perks, including team trips, birthday lunches, regular events, and even pool tournaments in the office, the firm ensures a healthy work-life balance for the entire team.
One of the things I appreciate most about working at southgate solicitors is the hybrid working, allowing me to split my time equally between home and the office. This flexibility has been invaluable, allowing me to maintain a good work-life balance while still staying connected with my clients and colleagues.
What’s more is that the firm is committed to its employees’ development, and I’ve found myself surrounded by colleagues who genuinely want the best for each other. Whether it’s through regular check-ins, mentoring, or professional development meetings and opportunities, the support system here is second to none.
From day one, I felt very welcomed and valued by the team. Everyone has been incredibly supportive, and I’ve quickly found my place within the firm. The collaborative atmosphere and the genuine camaraderie among colleagues have made my time here truly enjoyable.
Overall, my time so far at southgate solicitors has been incredibly rewarding. From the welcoming atmosphere and strong support system to the modern case management systems that enhance our ability to provide an excellent service to our clients, I couldn’t have asked for a better place to work. I look forward to continuing to grow and develop as a solicitor here and making a real difference to my clients’ lives.
Shlok Gor, Marketing Assistant
I joined Southgate Solicitors in December 2023, and it’s been an incredible journey. This is my first job after graduation, and I never imagined it would be this amazing. The vibes here are perfect, and the people are fantastic. Everyone has been so supportive and welcoming, making the transition smooth and enjoyable. I’ve learned so much in a short time and feel valued as part of the team. Truly the best place to work!
Ayo Abraham, Ex-Trainee Solicitor (Qualified in November 2023)
Ayo Abraham, Ex-Trainee Solicitor
I unfortunately left the firm in October 2023 to pursue another position, but requested for this to remain on the firm’s website for future candidates. Only southgate solicitors could turn my head! Prior to joining the firm in October 2021, I previously worked for a Local Authority and had no intentions of returning to work for a private firm. I had no prior knowledge of the firm and was recommended by a friend, and I can honestly say accepting a role at this firm was the best decision I have made. There is a stigma about family law being very emotional, coupled with long working hours and deadlines in quick succession, however southgate solicitors has successfully managed to tackle each aspect and has created a culture where this stigma does not exit. The firm has created a culture that focuses on the mental health of its employees, it has created an environment that is conducive to work and has produced a healthy work-life-balance.
Since I have joined southgate solicitors I have been afforded the opportunity to attend different seminars to develop my knowledge and profession which is very important especially for me as a trainee. You are encouraged to slow down and attend these seminars amidst of all the work which not only benefits you as an individual but also benefits your cases in the long run.
One of the many benefits I have found working at southgate solicitors is that you can say no to accepting more casework. You are not pressured into taking every case that comes along and you are encouraged to work within your capacity. This further speaks to how the firm focuses on the mental health of their team.
The definition of teamwork is southgate solicitors. All employees no matter the level, work collaboratively together and support each other. Each employee has built a relationship which allows everyone to feel comfortable with each other which is very vital in a firm.
I couldn’t ask for a better place to train at and I am thankful to the firm for consistently investing in me and my future.

I unfortunately left southgate solicitors in November 2022 to pursue another position, but requested that this remains on the firm’s website for future candidates.
Having over 20 years of experience within the legal profession I can safely say that southgate solicitors is the best place I have ever worked at, for a great number of reasons. Coming from traditional paper-based firms it was initially very different for me to encounter a paperless environment. However I’m glad that Hasan has taken this forward-thinking approach and I am thankful for his patience in training me, helping me to become much more efficient and in line with, if not ahead of the times. The firm’s approach to using new technology has also assisted me with being able to work remotely from anywhere in the world. This together with the firm’s extremely flexible working approach has allowed me to work from home whenever necessary, helping me with a much-needed work/life balance within our demanding profession and being a parent. I have so much to be grateful for southgate solicitors, including supporting me financially and practically with my mediation accreditation. You couldn’t ask for a friendlier environment or a better team to work with. We recently moved into new premises which have been designed with employee’s wellbeing in mind including a fully kitted kitchen, car parking and breakout room to name just a few of the perks. The team also regularly enjoy social gatherings either between us or with other peers and professionals, not to mention an annual fun-packed team trip helping us to get away, relax and enjoy each other’s company, away from our (much supportive and enjoyable) working environment.

- I unfortunately left southgate solicitors in July 2022 to go travelling, but requested that this remains on the firm’s website for future candidates.I joined southgate solicitors in December 2020 with the hopes of developing my family law experience, progressing within the legal profession, and working in a job I enjoy. After a year of working at the firm, I have certainly had the opportunity to achieve these goals in my current paralegal position. The team are incredibly warm, welcoming, and fun. When the country went into lockdown in January 2021, I was fully supported in the transition to working from home. Chloe Huggins, Ex-Trainee Solicitor (Qualified in October 2021)
- I unfortunately left southgate solicitors in October 2021 after qualifying due to relocating back home but requested that this remains on the firms website for future candidates. I thoroughly enjoyed working at southgate solicitors since 2018. When I started at the firm I quickly realised just how different the work environment was compared to my previous workplaces. One of the main things that stood out was how friendly and welcoming the team are. Everyone is there for each other and are available to lend a helping hand when necessary and to help you find your feet. The firm is committed to ensuring everyone has a good work-life balance. We are not expected to work all hours of the day and night and the firm is very flexible with outside commitments. For example, I undertook my LLM/LPC at BPP University and during this time the firm were very accommodating and allowed me the flexibility of study leave around exam times and additional practical help and support where needed. There are also regular social gatherings outside of work to get involved in such as networking events, social nights with the team and our annual Christmas party. We also have an annual team trip which allows us to relax and have fun away from work and this also allows you to get to know your colleagues out of the office environment. Our new premises includes a breakroom which offers employees the opportunity to break away from work for short periods to help with our wellbeing and to work more effectively. It is a very modern environment including up-to-date technology and systems to allow us to work paperlessly. The great thing about working at southgate solicitors is the ability to progress in your role. I originally started at the firm as a Client Services Executive, progressing into a paralegal role and then being offered a training contract with the firm shortly after. I thereafter qualified in October 2021. I am very grateful to the firm for providing such an opportunity in advancing my career. For any future candidates/applicants to the firm, i would not hestiate in highly recommending southgate solicitors as a great place to work and expand your career.

- I unfortunately left southgate solicitors in October 2021 to pursue a paralegal position in a different area of law, but requested that this remains on the firms website for future candidates.
I joined southgate solicitors in September 2019 with the hopes of expanding my knowledge within family law and improving on my current skills, and I was able to do that with the opportunity I was offered in my position. Within this role, I was able to network with other professionals at events we have hosted and undergo relevant training to ensure I am properly informed on my role and expectations. Everyone was very warm and welcoming, which is great as joining a tight-knit team can seem intimidating at first. Everyone was happy to help whenever I was unsure about what to do and they were able to take their time to explain to ensure I fully understand, even if they have a lot on their plate. The team are one of a kind which made even the most stressful days bearable and filled with positivity. Having worked at a variety of legal placements, it is was clear to see the difference in technology and systems in place – we offer a very modern experience which not only is easy to navigate, but is very beneficial for multiple reasons, such as the ability to easily track what is happening on a case without having to chase each other, and also allows the solicitors to work from anywhere. Being at the front of house, one thing I have noticed is the trusting clientele. Previous clients are always coming back to us whenever they have an issue and refer their friends and family to this firm, clearly showing they trust expertise of the team and the firm.
Nikita Shah, Ex-Client Services Executive
Nikita Shah, Ex-Client Services Executive
- I unfortunately left southgate solicitors in July 2022 to study the LPC full-time but requested that this remains on the firm’s website for future candidates.
- I joined southgate solicitors in November 2021. Having just graduated from university 6 months before, I was unsure of the area I wanted to work in, but knew family law was something I had a real interest in understanding. The firm hired me as a Client Services Executive, which enabled me to gain an insight into the workings and nature of family law. I was able to develop my current skills and gain an insight into the legal world. It was from working with the solicitors that I realised that this was the path I wanted to take, which is why I decided to leave the firm and study my LPC full-time.
- The team were so welcoming and from the very first week, I felt very comfortable. The benefits of working in a small team are that everyone makes an effort to get to know you and always make sure you feel included. Everyone is there for each other and very approachable – you can always go to someone if you make a mistake, if you need help or just need someone to confide in. We have regular social gatherings outside of work, so you can broaden your network and spend some time getting to know your colleagues away from work.
- The firm really value your work-life balance, which is something I was very grateful for. As a student, you hear that the legal industry make you work tirelessly with no social life, however, that was not the case here. We have a breakout room for when you feel too overwhelmed and a pool table for when you need to get away from the desk for a while. The firm uses a lot of modern systems and technology, which helps a lot when it comes to managing your workload and needing to navigate specific files. Everything is also paperless, which means the work can be done from home or in the office – you are always able to find anything you need.
- The firm have given me such a great experience especially in my first legal job after university. Not only have I learned a lot about family law, client service and case management systems, I also have made some great relationships with the team and overall had such an enjoyable experience.
- To any future applicants, I highly recommend southgate solicitors as a great place to work.

- After really enjoying studying family law I knew I wanted to gain practical experience in family law. I also gained skills and experience in client intake and on how a law firm operates.
- Right from the beginning, everyone at the firm was friendly, approachable, welcoming, and happy to answer any questions that I had despite their busy workload.
- The firm is very generous and often treated us to social nights and birthday meals.

I also gained skills and experience in client intake and on how a law firm operates.
- Right from the beginning, everyone at the firm was friendly, approachable, welcoming, and happy to answer any questions that I had despite their busy workload.
- The firm is very generous and often treated us to social nights and birthday meals.
- This has been a great first experience for me in the legal industry and I am very grateful for the experience and skills that I have gained while working at southgate solicitors.
