At southgate solicitors, we stay abreast of developments that impact our clients. The Government’s Family Mediation Voucher Scheme has proven to be a valuable tool, helping 27,000 separating families resolve disputes amicably and avoid the stress of court proceedings.
The Family Mediation Voucher Scheme provides up to £500 in funding to assist families in navigating the complexities of separation. This support allows couples to address issues related to childcare and finances outside of court, with a focus on reducing conflict and emphasizing the voices of children. Early data from the first 7,200 families to use the scheme shows that over two-thirds reached agreements without needing to go to court.
Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary, Alex Chalk, highlighted the scheme’s importance, stating: “Separation can be incredibly painful, but we know it is made more traumatic with toxic and protracted courtroom battles, which can cause lasting damage to children. This is why we’re determined to take the temperature down.”
Families can continue with additional mediation sessions and still have the option to go to court if necessary. They can also apply to the court to make their mediation agreements enforceable.
Following consultation, the government decided against making mediation mandatory for separating couples, due to concerns that proposed safeguards to protect domestic abuse victims might not be sufficient.
