A new set of standards has been introduced to better assist and protect children involved in care and legal proceedings.
Cafcass Introduces New Standards
The new measures have been developed by Cafcass, an organisation that supports children and families in legal cases. These standards are designed to guide Family Court Advisers and Children’s Guardians, ensuring every child receives exceptional and consistent support during family court proceedings.
Development of Standards
Cafcass Chief Executive, Jacky Tiotto, explained that these standards were created through extensive collaboration with practitioners and external partners in family justice. The aim is to provide children with an exceptional experience during family proceedings, emphasizing relationship-building, understanding their needs and wishes, and making sound assessments in their best interests.
Key Objectives
Tiotto stated, “Our ambition, as part of our new strategy for 2023 – 2026, is to ensure all children who need Cafcass support during family proceedings have an exceptional experience. This involves making relationships with them, understanding their situations, and making assessments that prioritize their safety and best interests.”
Children’s Understanding and Participation
The new standards ensure that children understand the recommendations made by Family Court Advisers and have the opportunity to express their views. Tiotto emphasized that the standards hold Family Court Advisers accountable to the organisation’s ambitions and responsibilities, representing a significant step forward in improving family justice services.
Conclusion
Tiotto concluded, “I believe this is what children have the right to expect from us and what they deserve.”
